Scarborough Film Festival is back for its second year!!

The festival runs from 15th-23rd March with 16 events and uses multiple venues around town including SJT, Mandy Apple, Woodend Galleries and Studies, Craft and the Railway Club.

This project is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network and also supported by JWS accountants.

Mandy Apple // Scarborough Zine Library: Film Poster Making Workshop

Saturday 15th March, 1pm-3pm, All Welcome

Come and make collage/zine posters inspired by films one you have seen, a random idea or about your own life! We will think about how we create and represent different stories. Creations will then be displayed in Mandy Apple during Scarborough Film Festival 20-23rd March.

This is a casual drop-in session, materials and warm drinks provided. All funds go to support venue.

Preview: Wind Tide and Oar, Huw Wahl, (2024)

Wind, Tide & Oar is a compelling exploration of engineless sailing, shot on analogue film over three years. The film delves into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements alone, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation.

A chance to see Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominated film Flow, ahead of its official release! It tells the story of cat, who is a solitary animal, but as its home is devastated by a great flood, he finds refuge on a boat populated by various species, and will have to team up with them despite their differences.

Magic Lantern Show

Thursday 20th March, 7.15pm, SJT The Round, 70mins

Come and experience the wonders of a magic lantern show, hosted by Dr Nick Hiley, academic and magic lantern collector, who will take the audience on an illuminating journey using a special selection of slides from his collection covering visual entertainment and the arrival of cinema from 1880 to 1910.

This Sundance Nominated debut feature film takes audiences on a rollercoaster ride through East London’s drag scene. When Layla, a struggling Arab drag queen, falls in love for the first time, they experience a crisis of identity in a transformative relationship that tests who they really are.

Inundated with excellent short films from all over the region, we have curated our Top Ten to compete for this year’s prizes. There will be myriad genres and subjects on display, with all the selected films

showcasing the exceptional filmmaking talent hailing from in and around our region. As well as the judges’ winner, there will be a prize for the audience’s favourite film, so come along and cast your vote!

Iconic British romcom starring Rik Mayall and Helena Bonham Carter. Set in Scarborough, it follows the misfortune of Neil, a bridegroom trying to get back to his bride with the help of his newfound friend Pandora/Julie. Chloe Abrahams’ debut feature documentary is an enveloping, hypnotic, personal meditation on family, memory, identity, violence, and love. At its centre are three extraordinary women: the director’s mother, Rozana; her grandmother, Jean; and the director herself. Their stories, by turns difficult and jubilant, testify to the entangled and ever-changing nature of inheritance and the ways in which we both hurt and protect the ones we love.

Film Launch: Milk Report 2025 + Q & A

A new short film by artists and designers Conway and Young explores the politics and economics of care through the lens of feeding a baby, and the 720 hours Young spent doing so. The film focuses on the improvised, chaotic, gendered, interdependent and messy nature of reproductive labour. Presented in collaboration with Crescent Arts, the screening will be followed by an in conversation and tour of the Feed

exhibition.
